Pirates beats Old Parks to take lead in Premier B League

GREENSIDE – Pirates Cricket Club secures a 61-run win over Old Parks.

A big win for Pirates Cricket Club in a top-of-the-table clash against local rivals saw them take the lead in the Premier B League.

Pirates hosted Old Parktonian Sports Club on a warm and slightly breezy afternoon on 31 March. The visitors won the toss and chose to bowl first.

This appeared to be a good decision when Pirates lost their first five wickets for 29 runs. But a partnership between Keegan Armstrong (56 runs off 108 balls) and Mike Groenewald (67 runs off 95 balls) lifted the team to a total of 181/7 in their 50 overs.

Bryan Jacklin was the best bowler for Old Parks, taking five wickets for 34 runs in his 10 overs.

Pirates Cricket Club chairperson Richard Connear said the target was a competitive one on a track that offered something for seamers.

“Our pace bowlers stole the show though, ripping through their line-up and securing a fine win,” he said.

In fact, only Eden Links showed any kind of threat to the Pirates defence. He scored a run-a-ball 69 as Old Parks was bowled out for 120 runs to give pirates a 61-run win.

Matthew Parr shone with the ball for Pirates to concede only 21 runs in a magnificent five-for. He was backed up by Bonginkosi Mabaso who took three wickets for 43 runs.

Connear said Pirates have two games left which will determine whether they can win the league.

“The race for top spot is a tight one, there are two massive weekends left for our squads to negotiate,” Connear concluded.
