Institute for Skills and Empowerment open doors for young cricketers

WAVERLY – The aim is to create good sport leaders and empower them in their academic careers.

Young cricketers wanting to further their skills in the sport have an opportunity to do so with a newly introduced programme.

The Institute for Skills and Empowerment based in the Johannesburg north-eastern suburbs invites young cricketers in school to take advantage of their new Provincial Cricket Development Programme.

David Mashiyi, the coordinator of the programme, said they were currently focusing on children from Lyndhurst, Glenhazel, Waverley and Alexandra.

“The schools will play tournaments in their neighbourhoods or areas… We will then select a team that will represent us at regional level where they will play with other teams from other areas to enable us to select a provincial development team in the U11 and 13 [age groups] for both boys and girls.”

The teams will have cricket and mentoring sessions for nine months and play games in the province, and during the October and December holidays, they will play against another province.

The institute has partnered with Jack Sport Foundation in East London and also works with Gary Kirsten Foundation in Cape Town.
