Parkhurst tennis is ready to serve
PARKHURST – Community members can set aside their Saturdays for a social bonding session while playing tennis at the Parkhurst Tennis Club courts.
Several residents made their way to the Parkhurst Recreation Centre for the tennis open day. The fun-filled family day saw various people turn up for the Parkhurst Tennis Club in collaboration with Tennis for Life tennis academy for the club’s revival.
New manager and tennis coach, Byron Schmidt said there was no club established in the area before September last year.
The newly-revived club’s wish list includes a lawnmower, weed trimmer, hosepipe, upgrades of restrooms and clubhouse as well as resurfacing of the four courts.
He added that they have different sections which cater for everyone and they coach mini tennis right up to junior tennis. Two different sections, which include beginner, intermediate and advanced are also run for adults as well.
Schmidt said there would be a social every Saturday with juniors in the morning from 9.30am to 10.30 am and senior socials from 2pm to 5pm in the afternoon.
“As visitors, you can come around and have R50 visitors fee. Otherwise, there is an annual fee of R1 190 for junior and senior membership for adults 65 and above and R 1 690 for senior membership (adults under 65),” said the manager.
Schmidt emphasised that these are just fun matches to get the community involved or for those looking for new hitting partners or new friendships. Membership would also include access to courts at members’ own leisure through booking 24 hours beforehand as well as membership cards.
Some of the club’s goals are to establish annual club championships and to select and form teams to enter the Gauteng Central Inter-Club leagues.
