The newly launched Parktown North-based Chess Heroes academy hosted their inaugural tournament alongside JNW Chess on 16 February bringing together top local players.
Founder of the academy Corno Klaver said, “This event is the first of many where we welcome people to an art-gallery vibe set up where they can enjoy a drink and a snack while watching top chess players complete.”
Klaver said his common ambition is that the academic platform will help students to understand their own style to determine their strengths and weaknesses and suggest how they can eliminate their shortcomings and develop the strong sides of their game.
Coach of 10 years Rodwell Makoto said,
“This is a new academy that’s evolving with the times to combine e-sports technology and chess. I do online coaching for kids. Today’s event brings together 20 adults and 10 children to complete across age categories to gain experience.”
Supporters of the academy enjoyed a drink and a snack while watching all the chess action at Klaver’s home in Parktown North.
Dawid Bezuidenhout (7) who won first place in the U12 category said, “I like that chess isn’t a rough sport. It’s lots of fun and I get to play other games in between with my friends. It’s great to come here because there’s enough space to focus and learn.”
Vian Ziegenhagen (10) who achieved second place in the U12 category said, “I like the attacking part of the game. I want to be in the top three in the region one day.”
Kyle Pienaar (9) achieved third place in the U12 category.
Top juniors from the tournament will compete at the Junior Closed event in Benoni from 16 to 23 March.
Top overall players at the tournament included first-placed Yashil Modi, Benjamin Hercules in second and Adrian Chappell in third.
The winners in the U20 category included Sonia Modi in first place, Tristen Kadenhe in second and AJ Myburgh in third place.
