New chess academy launches in Parktown North

PARKTOWN NORTH – The inaugural tournament will take place on 16 February.

New Parktown North-based chess academy Chess Heroes is hosting an inaugural tournament on 16 February bringing together adult and children competitors for a Swiss Rapid Invitational Tournament showcasing some of the best local talent.

The academy will join forces between JNW Chess and Chess Heroes to be the first academy of its kind in South Africa to focus on high-performance training and an online chess club.

Founder and owner of the academy Corno Klaver has coached chess for the past 20 years and welcomes children and adults to join the club.

“The opening tournament is a closed event with 10 adults and the top 15 children competing from Chess Heroes and JNW Chess Club,” said Klaver.

“Our common ambition is that this academic platform will help students to understand their own style to determine their strengths and weaknesses and to suggest how they can eliminate their shortcomings and develop the strong sides of their game.”

He explained that the opening tournament will have live games which will be broadcast online.

While this event is closed to the public, Klaver encourages members of the community who are interested in joining the academy to visit their website to find out about upcoming events or email coachhakia@gmail.com.
