Jacoba Football Academy aim for top spot in SAB League

SANDRINGHAM – This season you can expect a highly motivated team with an exceptional talent that brings the excitement of the South African football identity back into play.

The 2018/19 season looks promising for Jacoba Football Academy with their U21 team sitting comfortably in the top half of the SAB League table.

In its second season playing in the amateur side, the Sandringham-based academy sits on position four with only 16 games played and one game at hand.

Team manager and founder, Dimitri Athanasopoulos, said he is comfortable that they will finish the season in a good position this season.

Athanasopoulos said their goal this season, after doing a progressive analysis from last year, was for the team to finish in the top four of the league table.

“I would say we are currently on par with more room for improvement and we feel that we can achieve our goal by having great values such unity, integrity, a fantastic team spirit and a relentless die-hard attitude,” he said.

“We also want to attract quality players to the club, players with special qualities that we can nurture as well as players that are able to deal with highly pressured situations and maintain the high demand of performance.”

The team has put together a highly qualified technical team to enable them to achieve the highest levels of performance, added Athanasopoulos who is also an assistant coach.

The current head coach, Junior Mwape and goalkeeper coaches Lucky Sivhugwana and Samantha Mposi have been given a mandate to develop and improve the technical qualities of the team.

Athanasopoulos said their mandate entails improving the players’ tactical understanding of the game with a large emphasis on the technical qualities, helping them form better football playing habits.

“He (Mwape) is also expected to take the team to the top four of the league and strive for promotion if possible. Currently, there are no injury concerns and we have made a few new signings that we believe can be an injection to the performance of the team,” concluded Athanasopoulos.
