The Deutsche Sports Club Johannesburg wins again

AUCKLAND PARK – Deutsche Sports Club Johannesburg secures their spot in cup semi-final.

The Deutsche Sports Club Johannesburg (DSCJ) U12 team just cannot stop winning, even when they are outplayed.

The quarter-final of the Rand Central Local Football Association (RCLFA) Cup was held at Old Parktonian Sports Club on a cold and windy 26 August.

The home side, Old Parks, played so well that after the match both teams’ coaches admitted they deserved to win.

But it was not meant to be.

The DSCJ side has in its first year as an official soccer club, after breaking away from the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg, impressed all and sundry with the soccer ball.

The U12 team leads Old Parks Soccer Club at the top of the league table by only six points and both sides knew the game would be close.

It kicked off with even possession and the game quickened as time went by. DSCJ’s Philip Plate scored first after a poor clearance left the goals open to him.

Ball control became key for both teams as the game moved at lightning speed afterwards. Old Parks began to dominate possession and launch attack after attack.

DSCJ responded by tightening their defence and launching counter-attacks when they stole possession.

The visitors’ defence was excellent but their counter-attacks were even better, prompting the referee to later award Old Parks goalkeeper Colby Sinclair the man-of-the-match award for some spectacular saves.

Sebastian Sonnbichler headed a ball in for DSCJ from a corner to earn a 2–0 lead just before half-time.

The second half was all Old Parks as they controlled almost all possession and territory. They hit the post twice and forced a few more saves from the keeper, team captain Erik Machowski.

But they just could not score.

When the final whistle blew, DSCJ breathed a sigh of relief.

“Our defence did their job well although we lost the ball a few times in the midfield,” said Machowski.

He added that his team would work on their fitness before the semi-final. DSCJ coach, Morgan van Rooyen said Old Parks played ‘awesome soccer’ and put his team under pressure.

“Old Parks were the better team but we had two chances and we took them.”

The date and venue of the semi-final are yet to be announced.
