Vuleka School receives donation from Pirates Tennis Club

GREENSIDE – Community members who also happen to be tennis enthusiasts joined Pirates tennis Club at the launch of their courts as well as a donation to a school.

A sunny weekend afternoon was accommodating to community members who gathered at Pirates Tennis Club for two ceremonies.

One was the opening of the new tennis courts at the club and the handover of funds that were raised for Vuleka School in Dunkeld. The club started an initiative last year to develop tennis skills by offering coaching to the Grade 3 children at Vuleka School.

The coaching was paid for by individuals while they were looking for sponsorship.”However, they decided to donate the money to be used for sports equipment as the tennis initiative had to be put on ice when the major driving force behind it, Chris, immigrated recently,” explained Lizette Baker, headmistress at Vuleka School.

She said the club, aided by sponsorship from Lotto, Egoli Squash and other donors, offers coaching in a variety of sporting codes such as squash, hockey, soccer, athletics, to all the Vuleka School children as they do not have facilities at the school to offer these.

The club’s chairman Enzio Zambetti thanked those who had been part of the ‘Vuleka journey’ and raised funds. “I want to acknowledge Chris Davis who was the driving force behind the project and kept it going with a lot of enthusiasm. He organised a jumble sale to raise some money for Vuleka School,” Zambetti said.

He said the sale was held at the club and was an initiative meant to assist with the expenses related to coaching. He stated that they had raised R5 500.

Baker said, “We are so thankful for the money that they have donated to us today. We are going to use that to buy new soccer posts for our boys. We are also going to renovate part of our playground.”

She added that if there was more money left they would get some sporting equipment.

Lambetti went on to give a brief history of the tennis courts which he said they had refurbished after 20 years. “A lot of money was invested on fixing the courts and we hope these will last for a long time.”

The chairperson also extended his gratitude to Sue Rollinson from the Tennis Academy for training the children on a pro-bono basis.
