Dunkeld Bowls Club is the venue of choice for corporate team-building events.

DUNKELD – A progressive mindset has kept the Dunkeld Bowls Club ahead of the game.

Dunkeld Bowls Club is one of the trendiest and most popular bowls clubs around.

While many bowls clubs in Joburg are struggling to attract and keep members, Dunkeld has a thriving membership and is the venue of choice for local corporates to host team-building events.

According to club captain, Lionel van Niekerk, the progressive thinking of the club has kept it ahead of the game.

“We are in an area where there are lots of corporates and we aim to be accommodating,” he said.

“We even have a website and Facebook page. Not many bowls clubs do.”

Dunkeld, which is only eight years old as a club, has one of the youngest memberships among Joburg’s bowls clubs.

The social bowls on Saturdays see many new faces each week and the pub restaurant keeps everyone well-fed and coming back.

Furthermore, beginners courses are held at the club throughout the week, and then there are private events held at the braai facilities and clubhouse, such as birthday parties, nappy parties and even wedding receptions.

Live bands play at Dunkeld regularly, with Bombshelter Beast scheduled next on 3 August.

“Bowls is a great sport to play as it is very social. You can chat to each other in between bowls,” said club president, Peter von Holdt.

“You can play with many people or you can play on your own. You can even be in a wheelchair and still play.”

He said the sport is one for the family, and the club often sees young children play with their parents.

Van Niekerk and Von Holdt encouraged anyone interested in trying out bowls or hosting a function at the club, to contact them.
