Last Man Stands cricket nationals head to Marks Park

EMMARENTIA – The tournament will bring together 33 teams from across the country.

One of the biggest Last Man Stands tournaments, a professional and global T20 cricket league, will head to Marks Park from 27 to 30 April.

Owen Chitsinho, manager of Last Man Stands Joburg, said the 2018 national championship would bring together 33 teams and 192 players from across the country. Games will also be played at the Zoo Lake sports club and Old Edwardian Society in Houghton.

The two-hour, two balls, and two umpire games will be live scored.

“Anyone can follow the games, ball-by-ball action, from wherever they are from their phones or laptops,” he said.

The game will be broadcast live on Facebook.

Players will get stats soon after the game and will be ranked locally, nationally and globally every week. The winner will get free entrance to the Last Man Stands world championship in Australia next year.

Nine of the 33 teams will take part in the Cow Corner Cup, a tournament Chitsinho said was for players who just wanted to have fun and did not necessarily want to take it up professionally. The winner of the cup will get a R10 000 kit voucher.

Owen Chitsinho, manager of Last Man Stands Joburg, says supporters are most welcome and no booking or entrance fee is required.

Last Man Stands is a growing sport played by various countries, started in 2005 in the UK and in South Arica in 2006. And the reason it’s growing, Chitsinho said, was because people no longer have time to play cricket the entire day because of hectic work schedules.

“Now you can play for two hours and spend the rest of your day with the family.”

Chitsinho added that supporters were most welcome and no booking or entrance fee was required. The games start at 8am.
