Kaizer Chiefs confident ahead of PSL match-up against old foes

PARKTOWN – Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are braced for a battle of superiority.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) offices in Parktown was the venue for a pre-match briefing ahead of the highly anticipated second round match-up between Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in the 2017/18 Absa Premiership campaign.

Although 21 of the 41 league encounters played since the launch of the PSL in the 1996/1997 season, have fizzled out in a draw, Chiefs were buoyant ahead of the latest fixture. Chiefs defender, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, said the only result the Glamour Boys are in search for is a win on match day.

Mphahlele, however, made it clear that Chiefs already have an eye on the trophy.

“We’re sitting third on the log, one point behind Orlando Pirates,” said Mphahlele. “We’re fighting for the league and there’s no need to beat around the bush about it. We want to challenge for the league but if Pirates don’t want to challenge for the league, maybe they must bring their MDC (reserve) team.”

The defender took the opportunity to emphasize the magnitude of the derby and said they will not let their guard down against the Sea Robbers, adding that a draw is not what either team looks forward to. “It’s a big one and we plan on giving it everything. We’re playing against a team that is really doing well.

“They’ve also brought in new players and the team seems to be gelling very well, something we’re aware of.

“We know that it’s difficult for the fans to come in and fill up FNB Stadium only to witness a draw. It remains the biggest game in southern Africa – although I’m not too sure about it being the biggest game on the whole continent. We will attack Orlando Pirates and I’m sure that they’ll attack us too. I just hope and pray that there’s a winner at the end of the day.”

Details: Kick-off is at 3.30pm on 3 March at Soccer City in Soweto.
