Houghton golfers shine

HOUGHTON – Golfers swing hard in spirit too at Houghton Golf Club Ladies Chanpionships.

Women golfers at Houghton Golf Club brought their best games to the club’s Ladies Championships on 24 and 25 February, and not just in skill, but also in spirit.

The sun hid behind clouds for most of the weekend and conditions were not easy for the players, so that one or two struggled to remain positive amid the competitiveness and importance of the occasion.

But players consoled and encouraged each other so that smiles abounded and friendships remained true throughout.

“Our spirit and camaraderie are what sets us apart from other clubs,” said women’s club captain, Yvonne Johnston.

“We had a substantial field of 33 entries and we played out a very beautiful new signature hole: the 12th.”

She said the highlight of the event for her was handing out six trophies, and all to different women.

“It shows the great depth of fantastic, quality golf we have here. There was also a big turnout at the AGM to celebrate afterwards.”

With a gross score (before par) of 178, Angie Lanham-Love became the new ladies champion, ahead of Mary-Ann Summerfield who had a gross of 184.

Summerfield has a better handicap than Lanham-Love, and thus a better net score, but in the ladies championships, it is what you score at the tournament that counts.
