Old Eds buoyed for season ahead

HOUGHTON – Old Eds buoyed in the run up to a thrilling conclusion to the 2017/18 Gauteng Cricket Board Division A Limited Overs competition.

After suffering the humiliation of being relegated from Division A of the Gauteng Cricket Board Limited Overs (50 overs) competition at the end of the 2015/16 season, a revived Old Eds is back in the top division.

Old Eds won Division B in the 2016/17 season to secure their promotion and are now aiming for a top-four finish in their top-tier league comeback. The team currently sits second behind Division A leaders, Jeppe Cricket Club.

Old Eds coach, Brandon Buckley said the team had not had everything go their way so far this season.

“A couple of matches slipped away from us when we should have done better,” said Buckley. “[However], we have a good enough team to withstand a couple of setbacks. We lost a great opportunity to close the gap when we unexpectedly lost to Lenasia on the day that the other top teams [including Jeppe] also went down.”

Buckley added that since then, the team has shifted their focus and has a fresh eye on the season’s six remaining fixtures which will include a head-to-head against Jeppe.

“We’ve cleaned up our act and have pretty much won the last nine on the trot. Our batting is normally our strength but at this point in time, our bowling is even stronger. It just so happens that the matches that we lost, we lost having batted first rather than bowling first.”
