Alex’s Gauteng FC runs riot over its Soweto rivals Phalamorodu FC

ALEXANDRA - Gauteng FC gets the better of their Soweto rivals, Phalamorodu FC in the SAB League game at the Alexandra Stadium.

Ten-man Gauteng FC proved too strong for Orlando East team Phalamorodu FC in a SAB League match at the Alexandra Stadium and routed them 4–0.

It seemed the visitors had planned to stun the home side with quick goals as they made numerous inroads into the penalty area of Gauteng in the first 15 minutes but were let down by poor finishing.

Had they converted all their chances they could have been at least four up but their inability to find the back of the net allowed the home side to re-organise and settle into their articulate passing game.

However, it was made easier for Phalamorodu when the referee pulled out a red card, sending Aleck Letsoela off for a dangerous tackle. The visitors failed to take advantage of a 10-man Gauteng and it was prolific striker Muzi Khumalo who found the back of the net from a brilliant pass by Matthews Nthithe to put the home side ahead.

This was followed by a strike by Sandile Zungu, who took a brilliant free kick from the edge of the penalty area which left the Phalamorodu keeper bemused.

The two teams went into the halftime break with Gauteng leading 2–0 and upon resumption, Khumalo quickly scored his brace. The final nail in the coffin for the visitors came from the hardworking Nthithe who made it 4–0. Gauteng’s three striking musketeers of Khumalo, Nthithe and Zungu could have easily added five or so more goals to Phalamorodu’s misery had they been clinical in front of goals.

Coach Thabang Ramashia of Phalamorodu, a team founded and owned by SuperSport United marksman Thuso Phala, said, “We could have easily scored more than the four goals of our opponents had we been deadly in the face of goals. I think we need to work hard on our striking abilities and focus. These are the two things that cost us the game.”
