Joburg Zoo turned into a hub of fun and entertainment as it hosted the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa’s annual Nappy Run.
Andre Kalis, project manager for the event said, “Public awareness of the plight for [children] living with disabilities and the provision of a regular supply of nappies can, and does, mean the difference between a miserable childhood and one that builds hope.
“The event firmly puts the spotlight on children living with disabilities in South Africa. They live on the periphery of society, are excluded and don’t have the opportunities that [able-bodied] children take for granted.”
He said the needs of disabled children should not be ignored, but should instead be made an ongoing priority.
Little ones living with disabilities suffer a great deal of incontinence that is associated with various types of disabilities which the nappies assist to address.
South African actress, Eloise Cupido saw the need to assist the cause and joined the council in driving the message home. Together with the council, they launched the Nappy Run fun run, with Cupido becoming a fun run ambassador.
“What attracted me to the project is its primary focus that is aimed at children with disabilities. I’ve since found that even if getting the cheapest possible nappies is not an option if one wants to keep their child healthy and free of rashes,” said Cupido.
“What hit me the most, however, is how this need is lifelong for children with disabilities. Some of them don’t even leave their homes because families cannot afford disposable nappies. We need champions for children with disabilities to help create awareness of their need.”
