SA karate clubs shine at the KWF Cup in Malta

NORWOOD – SA karate champions were honoured with medals for their sterling performance.

Three top South African karate practitioners, Nick Baker, Prianka Pillay and Kevin Croft have made the country proud at the Karate No Michi World Federation Karate Cup in Malta in Europe.

The Malcolm Dorfman Parktown North and Shane Dorfman Norwood members brought home top honours.

Baker took the senior male kata category silver medal and Croft bagged the bronze medal. Pillay came home with two silver medals, one for senior female kata and the other for senior female kumite.

To top it all, the three South Africans won gold in the senior three-member unison kata category, pipping the formidable Japan team in the final.

Malcolm Dorfman, chief instructor at Karate No Michi South Africa and deputy grandmaster at Karate No Michi World Federation, said, “The three richly deserved the ovation and applause from spectators and competitors alike for their incredible performance. Not to be outdone by the seniors, the Dorfman Karate junior members also took their share of the spoils with aplomb.”

In the junior unison kata team category won by Japan, Dorfman said the SA B-team of Noa Burke, Matthew Pine and Aaron Friedlein took the silver medals followed in third place by the SA A-team of Grant Booysen, Tihan Enslin and Gadija Essop. The six members all belong to Dorfman Karate.

“A good number of medals were achieved in the junior individual categories by the Dorfman members,” he said.

Pine achieved a silver medal, Aimee Muha and Dylan Harry each took home bronze, and Friedlein was awarded two bronze medals in their various categories.

“Overall, South Africa took the second highest tally of medals. Russia took the most with Japan third.”
