Sports development and cleanliness are key in Joburg City

JOBURG – Children have a blast in netball and soccer in inner city event.

 

Joburg’s inner city residents enjoyed a fun day in the sun playing soccer and netball and talking about ways to keep the city clean.

JZ de Villiers Park was abuzz on 9 September as Stay City and other stakeholders promoted sports development among youth in the area while driving an awareness campaign to promote a clean and safe environment.

Ward 64 councillor, Matsemela Madisha officially opened the event before an aerobics session followed.

A coaching session as well as soccer and netball tournaments followed.

For the tournaments, 100 enthusiastic children were teamed into four groups comprising Jozi Housing, Trafalgar, Ithemba and Barnato Park.

The Trafalgar girls won the netball tournament, with Barnato a close second. Jozi emerged as the winning soccer team and received a floating trophy and a medal for each of the players.

Organisers highlighted the motto ‘Be proud of our space and keep our environment clean’ and asked the children to clean up before prizes were awarded.

Another competition was held for the best drawn picture depicting the theme. Thabile Ngwatwana from Barnato School won the competition for a drawing of people cleaning their neighbourhood.

“Our area has been invaded by drug pushers so we need to channel young people toward sport or institutions that can keep them out of trouble,” Madisha said.

He thanked everyone for their involvement in the event and highlighted the need for other local companies to al so assist.

Corray Uys, chief executive officer of Stay City said sports development is a wonderful way of uniting the youth in Joburg and uplifting the community.

The sports day was preceded by a sports development networking event at Stay City.

The organising committee included City of Joburg, Jozi Housing, Stay City, Trafalgar, Ithemba, management from the Legae La Rona and City Improvement District.
