Nine researchers from Wits received commendation from the National Research Foundation (NRF) for research excellence at the 2017 NRF Awards held in Bloemfontein on 14 September.

The awards, which are considered the benchmark for scientific research excellence in South Africa, took on the theme Sustainable Development through Knowledge Creation and were centred around the role knowledge creation plays in supporting and enabling South Africa’s sustainable development.

“Congratulations to all finalists and winners of the 2017 NRF awards, especially my Wits colleagues. You are all pioneers in your respective fields and your contribution towards creating new knowledge and finding solutions to the challenges of the 21st century will benefit our country and beyond,” said Wits vice-chancellor and principal, Adam Habib.

“Your commitment to research excellence at the advent of the fourth industrial revolution is essential for enabling an equitable global academy that benefits all humankind.” Academics Derk Brouwer, Christopher Mathew, and Yevhen Zelenyuk were awarded A-ratings for the first time, while fellow scholars Lynette Wadley and Shabir Madhi each received A-ratings for the second time.

As a result of the quality and impact of the research conducted and the outputs measured, the researchers are held in high regard – by their peers in the research community – as leading international scholars in their respective fields.
