Wolves bare their teeth

JOBURG - Alex Wolves win the final game of the season to be crowned Senior Grand Challenge 2017 champions.

Alexandra Rugby Club’s Alex Wolves has won the Golden Lions Rugby Union Senior Grand Challenge for the first time in their history.

In their final game of the season, Wolves walked away with a 12–0 victory against Kagiso Rugby Club in a match played on a dry and hard field at UJ Milo Park Stadium on 19 August.

Wolves coach Andile Kahla was over the moon with the win. “In the history of Alex rugby, this was our first time to win the league and it has taken us a lot of work to reach this milestone,” he said.

“I am very proud of my team as they showed determination and willingness to be the champs throughout the whole season.” And so was Ellias Mpengu, president of the club who had tears of joy in his eyes after the referee blew the final whistle.

Wolves had a strong start and showed their hunger for a try but Kagiso’s defence stood fast. However, their defensive line was breached when Wolves’ Katlego Polosho went over in the 30th minute for a converted try with Wolves going into the break 7–0 up.

In the second half, Kagiso showed they wanted to turn the tables by being more physical. But it was Wolves who put more points on the board 20 minutes into the second half when Mnelisi Zwane dotted down for an unconverted try.

Kagiso coach Abe Motsoadi was not impressed at all with the final result. “My team had a chance of winning but they didn’t use it as the ball was in the hands of the forwards most of the time,” he said.
