SuperSport casts the net wide in search of new coach

JOBURG - Matthews told us in an exclusive interview that they had three or four names of coaches in mind to replace Baxter but did not want to disclose the names at this stage.

SuperSport United has cast the net wide in its search for a new coach to replace Stuart Baxter who has taken up the coaching job at Bafana Bafana.

Club CEO Stan Matthews said Baxter would still be in charge of the team when they played Orlando Pirates on 24 June in United’s defence of their Nedbank Cup trophy.

Matthews said they had decided to split the coaching roles between assistant coach Kaitano Tembo and Baxter.

Tembo has been made stand-in coach for the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champion League campaign while Baxter will perform his last duties for the team in the Nedbank Cup.

“We did this solely for the sake of continuity. We wanted Baxter to finish off his league duties before fully moving over to Bafana and then offered the African campaign to Tembo. This was done in order to ensure the team does not suffer in both campaigns,” Matthews said.

Matthews told Alex News in an exclusive interview that they had three or four names of coaches in mind to replace Baxter but did not want to disclose the names at this stage.

“We have cast the net wide to ensure we secure the best coach,” he said. “We have big shoes to fill in the name of coach Baxter. We have set ourselves the deadline of 10 July to ensure the new coach starts his job as we begin to prepare for the new season.”

Matthews took the opportunity to praise the outgoing coach, describing him as ‘one of the best, an astute strategist and tactician who immediately turned the club’s fortunes around within a very short space of time, making a huge impact from the word go’.
