Sundowns let it slip against Bidvest Wits in Absa Premiership at the Bidvest Stadium in Braamfontein

JOBURG – Absa Premiership action saw Bidvest Wits taking on reigning league champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, at the Bidvest Stadium in Braamfontein in a result that favoured them on 1 May.

Bidvest Wits took on defending league champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, in a heated affair at the Bidvest Stadium in Braamfontein on 1 May.

The tie earned the Clever Boys top marks as they beat the Brazilians 1–0 in what was match 25 in the league for both teams.

The result saw Pitso Mosimane’s charges relinquish the two-point cushion they held over Bidvest Wits prior to kick-off, and now sees them trail the Clever Boys by one point, with five matches to play in the league. Speaking after the game, Mosimane said his side’s failure to convert clear-cut chances cost them a possible victory against the hosts.

“I think it was a game of missed chances from both sides, but I think we had more in the first half,” said Mosimane. “To be honest, in the first half they wanted it more than us, they fought more, they had a bigger fight than us in the first half.”

The Joburg side scored the only goal of the game five minutes before half-time through Ben Motshwari. “It’s football, you have to accept it. We had chances but we didn’t take them,” added Mosimane.

The coach, opting not to point any fingers at his defence which has been in solid form of late – going six games without conceding a goal before this game – indicated that football was about making the most of every chance.

“Football is not about should have and could have, the ball must go inside the net. We’ve been having a good run, we’ve been scoring a lot of goals and only conceded one,” he pointed out.

“You are ungrateful or unfair to the players if you want to complain about conceding one goal in six games. We still have five games to go.”
