The students of Andre van Tonder Taekwondo Academy performed exceptionally well at the American Taekwondo Association regional tournament in Pretoria North.
Chief instructor and owner of the academy, Van Tonder said with about 180 competitors overall at the tournament, all of his students who competed placed in their respective divisions.
He expressed great pride in his students’ achievements and said, “When you go to a tournament and everyone gets placed its an amazing thing. You obviously want a student to get something, but this was an absolutely amazing achievement.”
Van Tonder added that martial arts was a great way for children to learn independence and when they were rewarded for their hard work it helped their progression.
“Andre’s Taekwondo Academy is more than just martial arts. It is a place to build up kids from the age of three and up. Confidence, courage, perseverance and integrity is only a few of the life skills the kids learn in taekwondo.”

The students placed as follows:
40 to 49 age group:
- Jason du Toit – 1st form, 2nd weapon form, 1st sparring, 1st combat weapon
- Marissa Katz – 1st form, 1st weapon form.
30 to 39 age group:
- Andre van Tonder – 2nd form, 1st weapon form, 2nd sparring, 2nd combat weapon.
18 to 29 age group:
- Jessica Katz – 2nd weapon form.
14 to 15 age group:
- Darren Gomer – 3rd form, 2nd weapon form, 2nd sparring, 3rd combat weapon
- Gabriel Diamond – 1st form, 3rd weapon form.
12 to 13 age group:
- Aden Cohen-Louw – 2nd weapon form, 1st sparring, 3rd combat weapon.
10 to 11 age group:
- Da’el Basserabie – 2nd form, 1st weapon form
- Mira Cohn – 2nd form, 1st weapon form, 3rd combat weapon.
8 to 9 age group:
- JJ Harmse – 2nd combat weapon.
