Proteas batsman takes the prize

HOUGHTON – Cook takes Sportsman of the Year award.

 

Proteas opening batsman, Stephen Cook, was named the Old Edwardian Society (Old Eds) Sportsman of the Year at an annual awards ceremony held in Houghton recently.

In his debut Test against England at Centurion in January, Cook scored an impressive century and became only the sixth South African to amass a ton on Test debut.

Gus Pinker, water polo coach at Old Eds, was named the first runner-up following his selection to officiate at the Rio Olympic Games in August. This was Pinker’s fourth Olympics he officiated at following his selection for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.

Other nominees for the Sportsman of the Year award were Michael Batty for water polo, Mitchel van Buuren for cricket and Colin Webster for war games.

A number of sportsmen and women were acknowledged.
