Norwood taekwondo wins big

NORWOOD – 16 medals for taekwondo students.

The talented students from the Norwood-based André’s Taekwondo Academy brought back 16 medals from this year’s World Martial Art Games held in Johannesburg.

Instructor and owner of the academy, André van Tonder said, “It was the first time that an André’s Taekwondo team took part in this event, and the athletes made us all proud.”

Along with winning 16 medals, the academy secured four world games champion titles.

Van Tonder said that he is very proud of his students and none came back empty-handed. Hundreds of participants from the USA, India, England, Iran, Swaziland, Germany, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and South Africa attended the event.

Well done to the following students with their places and who also achieved SA development colours:

  • André van Tonder – Third place in Extreme Weapon Form and third place in Creative Weapon Form
  • Yisrael Shwer – Third place overall
  • Shaina Resnik – Second place overall
  • Amira Greestein – Third place in Creative Weapons
  • Senior instructor Marissa Katz – Second place in Creative Form, second place in Weapon Form and second place in Creative Weapon Form
  • Julian Katz – Third place in Creative Form and third place in Creative Weapon Form
  • Eden Leibowitz – First place in Creative Form, second place in Weapon Form and second place overall
  • Aron Cohen – First place overall, first place in Weapon Form and first place in Creative Weapon Form.
