The 23rd annual Saints Water Polo Invitational was hosted by St Stithians College from 20 to 23 October.
The invitational is said to be the largest of its kind in the world as it hosts 58 schools and has 750 participants. Schools from KwaZulu-Natal, Zimbabwe, Gauteng, Western Cape and Eastern Cape came out to do their schools proud.
Member of the Parktown Boys’ aquatics team, Tracey Fin explained that the team wore purple speedos as a way to get the youth talking. “Through this, we aimed to educate people about prostate cancer,” she said, adding that she hoped that men of all ages would not fear being tested.
The team’s kit was given to them by Hollard, which hosts the annual Hollard Daredevil Run, where hoards of men gather together in their purple speedos and run for prostate cancer awareness. The next Daredevil Run will be in February next year.
The speedos had phrases on the back that read ‘Cancer can kick my butt’ and also ‘Boardshorts are for sissies’.
The team’s coach and South Africa men’s water polo player, Etienne le Roux said this was a call to all men to join the initiative next year. “The team dares the gents to come out and show their support.”
Parktown Boys boarding pupils participated in the run last year and plan to do so next year as well.
