For the fifth year in a row, King Edward VII School (KES) has reigned supreme at the annual boys’ school inter-high athletics meeting which was hosted by St David’s Marist Inanda School.

The athletics meeting, which is in its 33rd year, included 10 of Gauteng’s best sporting schools.

KES reaffirmed its position as the top athletics school, winning the meeting for the 22nd time. Jeppe Boys took second place and Afrikaans Seuns Hoërskool (Affies) took third place.

The captain and vice-captain of the KES team excelled at the meeting. Captain Jethro Pieterse came 5th in the 1500m, 2nd in the 800m and won the 400m hurdles. Vice-captain Itumeleng Radiokana did well to win the triple jump event. Both boys led by example and ensured all the boys gave their best and competed with pride.

“We are very lucky at King Edward VII School to have [pupils] like these,” said Simon Thorne of KES athletics.

He said another great example was Sebastian Freeman who had a massive day after he was asked to run the open 3 000m, U17 1 500m and U17 800m, due to the absence of some athletes.

Freeman came third in the 3 000m and won the 1 500m and 800m events.

The competition was very tight with Affies, Jeppe and King Edward trading places on top of the scoreboard every couple of events.

Thorne added that he was immensely proud of the KES A and B teams, especially the B team as boys were literally hauled out of the classroom to compete due to late illness and injury of permanent team members.

“These boys were fantastic and contributed to the team’s success,” said Thorne of the B team.

“Similarly, those boys who were called up at the 11th hour to the A team can also be immensely proud of their contribution to the team’s success.”
