Coetzee set sights on donning the green and gold jersey

JOBURG – Local rugby player back after long injury and ready to fight for a Bok spot.

Xerox Lions player Robbie Coetzee still has ambitions of pulling the Bok jersey over his head after coming close a few years ago.

From a young age, rugby has been Coetzee’s passion and focus and started playing his favourite sport at the age of five.

Coetzee was chosen for the U12 Nike Rugby week and played in the U13 Craven Week.

In 2009, Coetzee made his debut for the Tuks rugby team and shortly after was invited to train with the Vodacom Bulls.

In 2012 he signed a contract with the Bulls where he played in the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup. At the end of that year, he made the move to the Lions and had no idea how big of a success he was about to become.

In 2013 he made his Super Rugby debut for the Lions against the Cheetahs and after a phenomenal season was noticed by the Springbok selectors and included in the squad for the very first time.

On missing out on the 2015 World Cup squad Coetzee said, “Hopefully I am not over yet, I am still working hard and I hope I can still get my chance to wear the Bok jersey.”

The Lions hooker missed part of this year’s Super Rugby season after undergoing a knee operation for a ruptured cartilage.

Coetzee returned to the Currie Cup for the Lions against the Sharks after a lengthy injury lay-off.

“My focus at the moment is just on the Currie Cup and getting back to my best,” he said.

Coetzee is not only a sportsman but also a businessman who loves to play the stock market. He enjoys finding new

challenges and has big ideas and dreams of what he would like to achieve in the entrepreneurial sphere.
