Best game yet for Pirates

GREENSIDE – Pirates Rugby Club smash the Northam Rhinos in the Gold Cup.

Pirates Rugby Club produced perhaps their best performance of the season when they defeated the Northam Rhinos 51–24 in their second Gold Cup fixture in Greenside.

Coach Bradley Wilkin said everybody, from numbers one to 15 played brilliantly, and that it was one of their best performances this season.

“We have a really good team and we want to go all the way in the tournament,” he said.

“The momentum gained from winning our first two games will help.”

Pirates flanker Christopher Newman was the link that Pirates needed to play a high-tempo game and put phases together. Newman scored within five minutes and again just after the half-hour mark to put his stamp on the game.

Fullback, Hanco Deale, who was selected for his goal-kicking, contributed 21 points and didn’t miss a single shot at goal.

Sheldon Williamson, who had to make way for Deale after 15 minutes and moved to scrumhalf, made a huge impact, said Wilkin. Williamson also scored Pirates’ sixth try.

Winger Bryce Nicholson also scored a brace with Jacques Swart adding to the try tally.

The Gold Cup is the premier club competition in South Africa, and includes teams from Namibia and Zimbabwe. Pirates beat the Windhoek Wanderers in their first match, and now have away games against the Rustenberg Impalas and the Evergreens Rugby Football Club from George, before the quarter-finals which start on 15 October.
