Investec Soccer League continues to nurture young talent

JOBURG – The Investec Soccer League builds a better tomorrow for the youth.

The annual Investec Soccer League finals took place at the University of Johannesburg on 10 September.

The league kicked off in April with 20 high schools participating. The prize on offer for the winning team was R90 000, R60 000 for second, third place would receive R40 000 and fourth R30 000.

The final day saw two South African football legends, Brian Baloyi and Jimmy Tau showing their support for the young aspiring footballers. The final four schools consisted of Thulani Secondary School, Moletsane Secondary School, Kwamahlobo Secondary School and Dr Beyers Naude Secondary School.

The youngsters took to the field with scouts from different clubs including Bidvest Wits, Pretoria University Football Club and FC Cape Town looking for fresh talent.

The final was a closely contested affair between two schools from Soweto, Kwamahlobo School and Thulani Secondary School. Kwamahlobo were leading Thulani 1–0 at halftime, but Thulani refused to give up and showed determination to come from behind to score two hard-earned goals to win 2–1 and was deservedly crowned the 2016 Investec Soccer League champions.

“As always, a great conclusion to what was a fierce contest with these teams giving their all,” said Setlogane Manchidi of Investec.

“It’s amazing the pride with which all participating learners represent their school playing, not only for entertainment but showcasing their talents for a greater cause – their own schools that are to benefit from the prize money.

“We look forward to engaging with the winning schools to explore how best to spend their winnings from the 2016 Investec Soccer League season.”
