Old Eds’ Annual Road Race a success

HOUGHTON – Runners compete in the Old Eds' racing day, with top participants excelling.

The Houghton-based Old Edwardian Society held its 37th Annual Road Race on 7 August with a phenomenal 3 000 participants completing either the 10km walk or 5km fun run this year.

Kabelo Melamu of Randmark Marathon Club won the men’s 10km race in a time of 31:47:00. Melamu took the lead at the 5km mark and remained unchallenged as he finished almost a minute ahead of Rocky Road Runner, Samuel Mathabathu.

In the ladies’ 10km race, Yolande Maclean of Born 2 Run Athletic Club, crossed the finish line in a time of 38:59:00 followed by Keneilwe Sesing of KPMG with only 19 seconds between them. Third spot, and first junior to finish, was taken by Robyn Kaltenbrum of KPMG.

In the men’s 21km race, it was a repeat victory for Derocious Makhobalo of the Nedbank Running Club who retained his title finishing in a time of 01:09:05, 16 seconds faster than his previous winning time.

“I ran with the 10km runners to start with to ensure I posted a good time,” said Makhobalo who has won the 10km race twice in three years after stepping up to compete in the longer distance race.

Makhobalo was followed by Samuel Katuu of the Fitness for Africa Athletic Club, who finished five seconds behind him followed by Rahael Segodi of Rocky Road Runners in third place.

Kim Laxton of the Rand Athletic Club won the ladies’ 21km race in a time of 01:26:41, four minutes slower than her second place finish time last year.

Second place in this race was taken by Bronwyn Small of the Born 2 Run Athletics Club with Wanderers’ Vicky Hansen placing third.

“The races again proved to be two of the most popular in the calendar in the Johannesburg area, and coming over two months after Comrades, it gave the runners an ideal opportunity to get back to serious running,” said Mike Dunk, communications officer of Old Edwardian Society.
