Wanderers Jockeys smash competition, win elite challenge trophy

ILLOVO – Wanderers Jockeys sweep past competition to claim coveted Greenfields trophy.

 

The Wanderers men’s hockey team known as the Wanderers Jockeys emerged victorious at the recent Greenfields Elite Club Challenge in Durban, taking home the coveted trophy and top prizeThe Jockeys beat Riverside Hockey Club 4–3 in the men’s final and walked away with R26 000, the largest prize money awarded in South African hockey history.

In the women’s tournament, the Riverside ladies hockey team clinched the title beating the Wanderers ladies team 4–0 to be crowned inaugral winners.

Ayden Shrives, synthetic turf manager at Greenfields South Africa said, “This weekend was a huge success and I would like to thank everyone that was involved in pulling everything together.

“The level of hockey that was displayed at the tournament was absolutely phenomenal and having the women’s teams involved this year just added to the spectacle.”

Adding to this was Wayne Phillips, Riverside Hockey Club’s chairman and the tournament director, who expressed pride at having successfully hosted the tournament once again and the effort that went into putting it together.

“We are so proud and delighted with this weekend’s event and the effort that the players put in on the field. I cannot thank everyone enough that was involved in putting together such a professional and prestigious event,” he said.
