Flames on course for championship

JOBURG - North West Flames continue their winning ways and are on course for the netball championship.

Log leaders, the North West Flames, had a training session against the Northern Cape Diamonds in their Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League match at the Ellis Park Indoor Stadium on 8 May, beating them by 82 goals to 21.

By half-time, the Flames were 34–8 ahead. The Diamonds best quarter was the final one in which they scored 10 goals. Player of the match, Kgomotso Itlhabanyeng, wing attack for the Flames, said the match had given her team the opportunity to focus on their own goals.

“We were able to concentrate on what we were doing and on trying to carry out what we have been doing in practice,” Ithabanyeng said.

Coach for the Flames, Dorette Badenhorst said she had tried some new combinations, for instance, using Renske Stoltz in the centre court rather than as goal attack.

“I wanted to give Marike Maree a go at goal attack. You never know when you might need another shooter,” Stoltz said. Badenhorst said the problem with a one-sided match was that players tended to lose focus. “I need them to make their own decisions and to take responsibility for their actions on court,” she said.

Results of the matches played on 8 May at the Ellis Park Indoor Arena included:

North West Flames 82, Northern Cape Diamonds 21

Free State Crinums 45, Kingdom Stars 25.
