Polo takes a swing at developing talent

JOBURG – The Inanda Club hosted a polo event which showcased the talents of underprivileged polo players.

The Inanda Club set the scene for a day of polo and socialising on 17 April.

The second annual Inanda Development Cup was presented by Land Rover, and six teams participated including Otima, Masterstock, Verdant Capital, Fulvic, Rocky Ridge and Marco Polo Giovanni Fourways.

The finalists of the cup comprised Fulvic and Optima, with Optima winning the match by eight goals to four.

The club’s polo director, Craig James said the Inanda Development Cup encouraged teams to be involved in development programmes and to include an underprivileged player in their team.

“One of the tournament entry conditions is that each team must include at least one development player in the side in order to enter the competition. These development players are underprivileged individuals whose job is to groom the horses. They are the unsung heroes as they put a lot of work into the horses. We gave them the opportunity to play in this prestigious event at the Inanda Club for a chance to win a sponsored prize from Land Rover and the chance to play in the Land Rover Cup later in the year,” explained James.

He went on to say that this is a win-win situation for the game as these development players learn more about the horses and the game through being a part of the competitive side of polo in the tournaments.

The event included beautifully presented food and many guests attended with their children.
