Sandringham women’s club set to shine at upcoming tournament

SANDRINGHAM – Read how this group of feisty women are keeping the Sandringham Ladies Soccer Club going six years after it was started.

The Sandringham Ladies Soccer Club is still going strong six years after it was started by a feisty group of elderly women in the suburb as a way to keep active.

The club, started in 2010, consists of 32 domestic workers who wanted to find a fun way to keep fit and to keep busy after hours.

Hilda Hamese, manager for the soccer club, explained the impact the club has had on members since its inception.

“Since we started the club, many of us have experienced positive changes to both our health and ability to keep active,” she said.

“It personally helped me a lot because I can now walk faster, whereas in the past walking was a difficulty, and I no longer get sick as easily, which is a good thing.”

The group of women, now consisting of both old and young domestic workers, practise every day at 5.30pm and often take part in various matches across Gauteng with other elderly women.

This weekend on 16 April, the group will take on another women’s soccer team in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, as part of a one day tournament, a match the women are eagerly anticipating.

Hamese concluded by appealing to interested domestic workers working in the Sandringham area to join the club.

“Our soccer club is always open to anyone wishing to join; we always encourage others to come and play with us,” she said.
