Freedom Ride cycle event on 17 April

JOBURG – The Freedom Ride cycle event is open for all riders of all ages.

The fifth edition of the Freedom Ride cycle event will be held on 17 April 2016.

The ride will start at the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein at 7.30am and will make its way to Vilakazi Street in Soweto and back. Hosted by the City of Johannesburg, in partnership with Hollard, the event hopes to build on the spirit of the previous four rides.

The route returns to that of the original one held in February 2014. The route is 35km but there will be public transport available for those who may only want to cycle 17km.

The ride seeks to celebrate the life of former president, the late Nelson Mandela, promote safe cycling in Johannesburg for commuters and recreational riders, and offer residents an opportunity to explore the city and its new cycle lanes.

There is no charge, but participants should register online or by e-mail, and they also have the opportunity to donate to the Bicycle Empowerment Centre currently operating in Orlando, Soweto.

The route winds its way west from Braamfontein through historical areas like Brixton, and Newclare and into Soweto, spending a short time in the vibrant area around Nelson Mandela’s house in Vilakazi Street.

It then continues through Diepkloof, past the FNB Stadium in Nasrec and into Mayfair and returns to the Nelson Mandela Bridge. This is not a race and cyclists of all ages (including children) are encouraged to ride.

Cyclists must wear a helmet and there will be mechanical support and three water points. Past rides have been immensely enjoyed by the residents of Johannesburg and it is an ideal opportunity to explore the city by bike.
