Cook called up to Proteas Test squad

JOBURG - The South African cricket selectors have called up bizhub Highveld Lions batsman Stephen Cook to the Proteas squad for the final Test match against England at SuperSport Park on 22 January.

The Lions opening batsman currently tops the Sunfoil Series batting averages with 415 runs at an average of 83 including two centuries. If Cook gets selected for the final match he will follow in father Jimmy’s footsteps of playing for South Africa in a Test match.

Jimmy played in three Test matches for South Africa against India and Sri Lanka between 1992 and 1993. “Stephen has been in excellent form this season and gives us another option at the top of the order,” said selection convener, Linda Zondi

Cook’s selection could not have come at a better time for the Proteas with Stiaan van Zyl struggling at the top of the order. Van Zyl’s highest score in two Test series has been 34.

Cook, the 33-year-old former King Edward VII pupil has been one of top run scorers in domestic franchise cricket for the past five seasons and has 35 first-class centuries.
