Transforming bowls

LOMBARDY EAST - According to organisers, the HomeBid Spectacular Circle of Talent Trips bowls event held at the Lombardy East Bowling Club in December was a huge success.

According to Desiree Levin, a Proteas disabled bowler and event organiser, the idea of the competition was to give bowlers an equal opportunity to participate, regardless of race, colour, gender or disability.

“Throughout the day the play was incredibly competitive, yet in a forum of this nature much fun was had, and exceptional tolerance and harmony were displayed by all on and off the field. This was true sportsmanship at the highest level,” said a delighted Levin.

The event attracted a number of youngsters including 10-year-old Xavier Kramer and 11-year-old Thabo Banda, and several U19 King Edward VII School boys.

Levin was happy to see young players getting more involved in the sport and said, “This proves that even at the highest level, lawn bowls is no longer an old man’s marble game and is, in fact, attracting many younger players to the excitement and skill of the game.”

Levin said they hoped that bowls would be introduced as an official school sport in all provinces.
