Lombardy East Bowling Club to host lawn bowls event

LOMBARDY EAST - The Lombardy East Bowling Club is set to host a lawn bowls event to help transform the sport on 20 December.

The incredible success of the South African disabled lawn bowls team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and subsequently winning at the World Championships in New Zealand earlier this year has helped the development of the sport throughout the country.

Desiree Levin, a Protea bowler said, “We have acquired a number of new black bowlers countrywide and we now have at least two black Protea bowlers. Our event on 20 December is an absolute first for lawn bowls and is designated to be a Christmas special,” she said.

Levin said the event was a unique and friendly competition that will hopefully expose talent and promote transformation of the sport. Each team in the competition would be made up of a blind or disabled player, a black player and an able-bodied player.

“The idea behind this is to show that lawn bowls is one of the very few sports that can be played and enjoyed from the cradle to the grave, and that crosses all boundaries without discrimination of age, gender or ability,” she said.

“We would love to promote our black Protea bowlers in order to gain greater support, interest and participation… transforming bowls into a mainstream sport for the Commonwealth Games.”
