Novo Nordisk #Cycle4Diabetes relay a success

JOBURG – A group of 35 cyclists gathered at the offices of pharmaceutical company, Novo Nordisk, in Rivonia for the Cycle4Diabetes relay initiative, a 48-hour relay race which aims to raise funds and awareness for the treatment of children living with diabetes.

The cyclists reached their cycling destination after a 48-hour non-stop relay from Rivonia to Soweto and then to Standerton in Mpumalanga, ending in Newtown.

A formal ceremony was held to wish the cyclists a safe trip from Rivonia to Soweto, and to see the cyclists off was Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Parks Tau.

TV and radio sports personality, Mpho Maboi was the MC of the ceremony and she said she would like to take on the challenge next year and join the cyclists.

Dr Timmy Kedijang, general manager of Novo Nordisk, proclaimed his excitement over the event and said the challenge was the company’s fourth annual event.

This challenge is Novo Nordisk’s way of raising awareness about the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle, as well as striving to ensure free diabetes screenings are made available to everyone.

Tau, who is also a cyclist said, “Healthy lifestyle habits such as exercising and eating well from an early age are basics to preventing diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses.”

Mahlangu added, “Congratulations to Novo Nordisk and their successful initiative. I’m hoping the awareness will help us all change our [lifestyle] habits.”
