Sensei makes a difference

PARKTOWN - Sensei Gary McLean chief instructor at Mascon DOJO teaches martial arts and values at the same time.

Sensei Gary McLean, chief instructor at Mascon Dojo based in Parkmore, teaches mixed martial arts (MMA) which include karate, judo and kickboxing.

He also teaches at various schools around Johannesburg, including Laerskool Unika in Randburg, Roedean School in Parktown and Kathstan College in Benoni.

“MMA builds confidence, discipline, character, self-esteem and self-worth, not to mention the success that follows hard work through gradings and tournaments,” said McLean, who has black belts in all three disciplines. Respect for self and others is the core philosophy McLean tries to impart.

He also teaches his pupils the history of martial arts. Karate means empty hand and has Chinese, Indian and Japanese influences. Judo, or the gentle way, is purely a Japanese martial art grounded in boxing and the ancient French fighting art of savate.

“It’s so inspiring to see a class sitting quietly and patiently, not saying a word and waiting for their sensei to start the class,” said Tania van Heerden, a parent of a karate student.

McLeans’ teachings to all his pupils are:
