Rushing adrenaline

PARKHURST – Local canoeist Janet Bartlett is certainly no fish out of water, as she proved when she took first place at the N4 Trac Lowveld Crocodile K1 river race.

Held on 26 and 27 September in the picturesque valleys of Schoemanskloof in Mpumalanga, water released from the Kwena Dam upstream causes the river to flow with a fast downhill gradient along the contours of the surrounding mountains.

Canoeists had to paddle 30km stretches of the river on both days.

“Numerous rocky rapids, steep drops and sharp tight corners with huge boulders scattered across the narrow river provided a spectacular and scenic challenge for experienced whitewater river racers,” said spokesperson for the Gauteng Canoe Union, Jennie Dallas.

“The river is famous for its reputation of not having any flat water stretches between rapids, so it’s 30km per day of pure unadulterated fun.”

The experienced Bartlett has completed the race four times before and tries to never miss her annual adrenaline fix. She finished both days of the race as the winning woman in a time of just under six hours.

Bartlett said it was a privilege to paddle on such a pristine river.

“It’s a very tough race,” she said.

“It’s a technical challenge because there are many obstacles like rocks and trees. But all in all, it was a great race.”
