Old Eds finish third in Hockey Premier League

JOBURG - Old Eds lost to Wanderers on penalties in the semi-final of the Hockey Premier League.

Old Eds was up 4-0 at halftime with double strikes from Luke Sanan and Jeremy Hard. However, in the second half, Old Eds picked up five cards which meant they played most of the second half with only 10 men.

This enabled Wanderers to come back and level the score to 4-4. The game went into a penalty shootout, and although Old Eds goalkeeper, Rene da la Peyre was outstanding, they lost 7-8.

In the playoff for third place, Old Eds beat rivals Jeppe Old Boys 4-1. Sanan shone again to score a hat trick with Stuart McDade netting the fourth goal to help his side finish third in the league.

Old Eds coach Thornton McDade said, “The season was thoroughly enjoyable in terms of a team vibe. The fact that the semifinal and final were played a month after the completion of the round robin matches – and it was played as a double header over one weekend – was not ideal.

“Considering the number of injuries we had during the season, a top three finish was good. Over the last weekend, we were missing six of our regular players which made out task even more difficult.”
