Effeminate Element to represent SA

SANDRINGHAM – Elements Taekwondo Dojang which is based at Jabula Recreation Centre can consider themselves proud this Women’s Month.

Leanne Prodehl, a long-standing member of the Dojang (school) will compete at the 19th International Federation of Taekwondo World Championships from 24 to 30 August in Ploudiv, Bulgaria.

Julia Wright, the chief instructor of the Dojang has known Prodehl throughout her 12 years as a Taekwondo student at the school. She said Prodehl had been selected from Dojangs across Gauteng and Cape Town to represent SA in a single category.

“There is only one person per category [which are split by degrees, or dans], and Prodehl has managed to make it [into the team] as the only female fighter,” said Wright.

Wright added that Prodhel had a first degree black belt, and would be competing in individual first Dan Patterns and in Under-57kg female sparring. “Taekwondo is a small sport locally, but the world champs is impressive in its size,” said Wright. “Fighters from 87 different countries will be competing.”

She hoped that Prodhel’s achievement would show the public that Taekwando was not just a sport for men, and that it would attract more people to take up Taekwondo.
