BIDVEST Wits showed resilience as they advanced to the semifinals of the MTN8 after recently beating SuperSport United 3-1 at the Bidvest Wits Stadium.

This was the first competitive match of the season for both teams, but they showed no signs of rustiness. Wits started as the better of the two teams, having much of the ball possession.

Sibusiso Vilakazi of Wits and former Mamelodi Sundowns winger, Elias Pelembe, combined with brilliant pass interchanges to give the Clever Boys an early lead.

The former Premier Soccer League referee of the year, Victor Gomes, sent a strong message to the players when he gave Buhle Mkwanazi and Kingston Nkatha their marching orders.

SuperSport dominated the second half after a tactical change by coach Gordon Igusund brought on David Mathebula, who replaced Bradley Grobler, and he made an instant impact.

Mathebula made his presence felt as he orchestrated the move that led to the equaliser when he supplied Dove Wome with a sublime pinpoint pass. Wome provided a great cross to Luke Brockie who connected to level the score.

The game ended in a one-all draw. Both teams went into extra time playing with 10 men and the game looked poised to be going for penalties.

Wits came out guns blazing in the first half of extra time, and the former SuperSport midfielder Dane Klate scored with a great header to break the hearts of his previous teammates. Henrico Botes put the game to bed when he converted a magnificent long-range effort that went into the top corner, leaving keeper Ronwen Williams with no chance.

Wits now wait for their next opponents in the semifinal which is set to be played on 15 August.
