Old Eds Comrades runners carbo load

HOUGHTON - The annual pre-Comrades breakfast of the Old Edwardian athletics club was attended by just over 40 runners and supporters.

There will be 31 Old Eds runners lining up at the start in Durban this year, which is an increase of more than 50 percent from last year as the club has been able to attract new members.

Of those running, nine will be taking part for the first time, there will be three married couples, and the runner with the most runs to his credit will be Albert Fayard who is running his 29th Comrades.

President of the Old Edwardian Society, Richard McEvoy, who has run 24 Comrades and earned 22 silver medals, spoke to the runners about the marathon.

For those running their first Comrades McEvoy said, “Comrades is not a hard race, it is a long race. There will be some amazing experiences along the way and you will be amazed by the support you will get from the people lining the route.

“You should keep to your normal schedule as before any other race you have run, and do not let the emotion of the day dictate what you do. The next day you will have some wonderful stories to relate about your experience.”
