World’s only high altitude surfski race

EMMARENTIA - The Dabulamanzi Canoe Club recently hosted the High Altitude Surfski Championship on 9 May, which saw Rosebank resident Bradley Fisher finish third place in 00:56:19.

The only surfski race of its kind in the world, organisers arranged motorboats to provide waves as simulated surf to provide a challenge for the paddlers and add to the fun and excitement.

The race attracted more than 100 participants including Dawid Mocke, multiple winner of the world paddle ski series, and Andy Briskett, current multiple Dusi river race winner.

Carbonology provided prizes and loan skis for paddlers to try out.

The race was dedicated to Mark Feather, a well-loved paddler lost at sea last year.

Winners of the 12km event, Dave Hamilton-Brown and Wayne Jacobs, finished in 00:53:23, with Andy Birkett in a single ski in second place in 54 minutes.
