Old Eds members complete the Two Oceans Marathon

HOUGHTON - THERE was a strong contingent of Old Eds runners at the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon this year.

The Old Eds sports club had eleven finishers in the 56km race and four members who ran the 21km race.

The first Old Eds runner to finish the 56km race was Konstantin Bosch in a time of 04:33:13, followed 10 minutes later by fellow member Olivier

Cebe, while Alastair Stewart just missed the five hour mark by seven minutes. Fellow runner Linda Icely unfortunately missed the marathon’s six hour cut-off time by literally one second.

“Running the altered route with Ou Kaapse Weg being used instead of Chapmans Peak, the race was harder and very testing,” said Icely.

“But I knew if I could get to the standard marathon mark inside four hours twenty five minutes, I would make it, but I was four minutes down at that stage. “Southern Cross Drive was really tough as was Main Road. It was quite an experience being counted down coming into the finishing straight as I

have seen this happen at Comrades, but never been part of this experience before. The rope was literally pulled right in front of me.”

Icely was the first person to receive the Blue Medal for those who do not make the six hour cut-off.

Fellow Old Eds Club members Justin Gilham, Albert Fayed and Anthony Naguriah also received Blue Medals.

However, four runners from the club did manage to beat the six hour mark and they were Mzwanele Dyasi, Matthew Burbidge, Gregory Canning and Judy Rothberg.
