Old Eds title chances suffers a blow

HOUGHTON - Old Eds first cricket team lost against Varsity Cup semi-finalists, University of Johannesburg.

The university side has a strong Old Eds connection with five of their players having played for the club.

Old Eds batted first and lost Stephen Cook in the first over followed shortly by Devon Conway.

It was left to the middle order to accumulate runs on the board with Callum Haggett scoring 57 and Reggie Grey weighing in with 33.

Old Eds were dismissed for a lowly 177 which was never going to be enough against the strong batting line up of the students.

Lee Gruskin led the students by scoring 113 runs, with his team passing the target with all 10 wickets intact.

To add further salt to the wounds, former Old Eds players Yaseen Valli (80) and Grant Roelofsen (34) saw the students accumulate 280/4 to gain maximum batting points.

Old Eds have now slipped to sixth on the log, and their chances of retaining the title they have won for the past two seasons has taken a backward step.
