Cricketer hones skills in England

JOBURG - Former King Edward's pupil, David Sator spent the three months playing cricket in England.

Sator started playing cricket at the age of 12 when he received coaching from Jimmy Cook, and played for the school first team as well as representing Gauteng at the Coca Cola week twice. He first played for Old Edwardians at the age of 16 and made his premier league debut the following year and since then

has been a consistent member of the team and was a part of the team that won both the Limited Overs and Time competition in the 2012 to 2013 season.

Sator was contracted to play for Chesterfield in Derbyshire in England, and was surprised at the quality of play he encountered.

“I was told I would ‘clean up’ there with my bowling, but soon found that we played against players who had county championship and county 2nd X1 experience. It was a wake up call” Sator said.

“When I got there my bowling deserted me and it was not until I had some coaching from the former England player, Mike

Hendricks, that my bowling came right” he said.

Sator then concentrated on his batting and scored 688 runs throughout the season including two scores in the nineties, and finished with an average of 38.

He also attended the Nottinghamshire Academy twice a week and noted that the way they practiced there was an eye opening experience. “They have a different culture, think differently and run their practice sessions completely different to the way we do here. They concentrate on net skills, fielding and fitness training, and I believe that I benefited tremendously from that approach” said Sator.

Sator would thoroughly recommend any young cricketer who was offered a chance to play cricket in England like he did to

take the opportunity, and learn to play in a different structured environment.
