Sacred Heart boys complete 94.7 Cycle Challenge

HOUGHTON - SACRED Heart College staff are beaming with pride after three of their pupils completed the 947 Cycle Challenge.

Grade 9 pupils Cullen Hettema, Michael Lazarus and Mujahied Moses cycled in the race. Cullen and Mujahied participated in the 55km mountain bike race on 9 November, followed by the 947 road race with Michael on 16 November.

According to college spokesperson Naomi Meyer, over 32 000 people participated in the road race.

“The cycle challenge started at 5.30am on 9 and 16 November. The route has moved to Riversands Commercial Park, Fourways. The 947 Mountain Bike Challenge is held the weekend before the road race. It consists of two distances, a 30km race and a 55km race, the road race is 94.7km,” Meyer said.

Hettema, who considers himself a mountain biker, finished the mountain bike race in 03:20:00.

Lazarus, Moses and Hettema completed the road race on 16 November. The three boys took five hours to reach the finish line. Hettema said, “I love cycling, it teaches me perseverance and courage. I also enjoy being in nature.”

Meanwhile the head of sport and physical education at the college, Peter Augustin said, “Sacred Heart College congratulates the three boys, they excelled at the races, and took them seriously.”
